Whole-home music is one of the most-requested features in a smart home. Walk into the kitchen and the playlist is already playing; head out to the patio and it follows you. But “multi-room audio” covers a wide range of systems, and two names come up in almost every conversation: Sonos and Autonomic. Both are excellent. They’re just built for different jobs.
Here’s how they compare, and which one tends to make sense for different homes and businesses.
The short answer
- Sonos is usually the better fit for a handful of rooms, retrofits, and homeowners who want an easy app they already know.
- Autonomic is usually the better fit for larger homes with many zones, centralized equipment racks, and a professional control system like Control4.
- Many homes end up with both: a centralized system for in-ceiling speakers, plus Sonos in a few rooms.
How Sonos works
Sonos is a wireless, room-by-room platform. Each room gets its own Sonos product: a speaker, a soundbar, or an Amp powering in-ceiling or in-wall speakers. Everything is grouped and controlled from the Sonos app, with AirPlay 2 and Alexa or Google voice control on many models.
Sonos has also moved further into custom installation. Its Amp Multi, announced in early 2026 and sold through installation partners, has eight amplified outputs that can be configured into up to four zones at 125 watts per channel, in a rack-friendly chassis. That makes Sonos a more practical option for larger architectural speaker systems than it used to be.
Where Sonos shines:
- Familiar, easy app that most family members already know
- Great for retrofits: many products need only power and Wi-Fi
- Easy to start small and add rooms over time
- Soundbars and subwoofers that pair with the same system for TV rooms
Things to consider:
- Performance depends heavily on a solid network. Sonos is only as good as your Wi-Fi and wiring.
- Many separate boxes spread around the house can be harder to manage in a large home.
- The app experience is controlled by Sonos, and software updates can change how features work.
How Autonomic works
Autonomic is a centralized, rack-mounted system designed for custom integration. A single streaming amplifier lives in your equipment rack and powers speakers throughout the home. For example, the Autonomic MA6 provides six amplified zones plus two pre-amp outputs, 120 watts per channel at 8 ohms, independent AirPlay 2 in every zone, and high-resolution network streaming, with Control4 compatibility and optional internal storage for a music library.
Where Autonomic shines:
- Many zones from one centralized unit, with no equipment hidden in every room
- Deep integration with professional control systems, so music can be part of keypad scenes like “Good Morning” or “Entertaining”
- Wall keypads and touchscreens, not just a phone app
- Built for larger homes, estates, and commercial spaces
Things to consider:
- Higher upfront investment than a few Sonos components
- Best planned during construction or a major remodel, with speaker wire home-run to a central rack
- Professionally installed and programmed, not a DIY product
Side-by-side comparison
| Sonos | Autonomic | |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Room-by-room components (Amp Multi adds a centralized option) | Centralized rack-mounted streaming amplifiers |
| Best size | 1–6 rooms, growing over time | 6+ zones, whole-home and estates |
| Control | Sonos app, AirPlay 2, voice | Control systems, keypads, touchscreens, AirPlay 2, app |
| Retrofit friendly | Excellent | Possible, but best with prewire |
| TV & soundbars | Strong soundbar and sub lineup | Focused on distributed music |
| Installation | DIY or professional | Professional |
Which one makes sense for you?
Choose Sonos if… you want music in a few key rooms, you’re upgrading an existing home without opening walls, you want TV soundbars in the same system, or you’d like to start small and expand.
Choose Autonomic if… you’re building or remodeling, you want music in eight, twelve, or more areas, you’d like keypads and one-touch scenes through Control4, or you prefer all the equipment out of sight in one rack.
Consider a hybrid if… you want a centralized system for in-ceiling and outdoor speakers, but also want Sonos soundbars in the family room and bedrooms. Many professional control systems can manage both.
Don’t forget the speakers
The amplifier and streaming platform are only half the system. Speaker choice and placement matter just as much. We’re a direct dealer for Triad and TruAudio, whose in-ceiling, in-wall, and outdoor speakers can be paired with either platform.
